Minister al-Zaouri emphasizes importance of transitioning UN programs to sustainable projects
[21/08/2024 07:08]
ADEN - SABA

The Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, Dr. Mohammed Al-Zaouri emphasized the importance of transitioning the emergency humanitarian programs of UN organizations to sustainable development projects that meet people's needs and assist the vulnerable groups, amidst the severe economic challenges left by the war waged by the terrorist Houthi militias for over ten years.

During his meeting Wednesday in the temporary capital Aden with the head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Yemen, Markus Werne, al-Zaouri reiterated the legitimate government's support for the programs of international organizations working in the country, and providing them with all the technical and logistical facilities.

He pointed out that the economic and living conditions of the people have become more complicated due to the militias' targeting of oil facilities, oil export ports, and international shipping lines in the Red Sea region, which contributed to weakening the lifesaving food supply chains in various parts of Yemen.

He reiterated the government's demand to relocate the headquarters of international organizations to the temporary capital Aden, and to empower local civil society institutions to carry out their humanitarian activities, providing them with the necessary support and building their technical and administrative capabilities so that they can play a better humanitarian role in serving the community, in implementation of the outcomes of the round table held in Aden to discuss the humanitarian response plan in Yemen.

The Minister pointed out that the arrival of grants and financial aid to Sana'a has weakened humanitarian activities in the areas under the control of the legitimate authority, as well as the areas under the control of the militias, due to the restrictions they impose on the flow of aid and the obstruction of its reach to the target beneficiaries.

He called on the United Nations to take a firm stance against the threats to its employees by the terrorist Houthi militias in their areas of control.

For his part, the head of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in Yemen, Markus Werne, affirmed the office's commitment to finding solutions for UN employees who are subjected to violations by the Houthi militias and arranging for the relocation of organizations' headquarters to the temporary capital Aden to work under the supervision of the internationally recognized government.

He also referred to the efforts made by his office in calling on donors to support development projects and provide humanitarian assistance to the people in all Yemeni governorates.
