Minister of Water and Environment Eng. Tawfiq al-Sharjabi met Thursday with the Regional Director of the Green Climate Fund (GCF) Thomas Eriksson, discussing areas of cooperation and ways to support priority climate projects in Yemen.

The meeting, held on the sidelines of the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Belem, Brazil, reviewed the Climate Information and Early Warning System (CIEWS) project currently being developed in cooperation with the World Bank, and discussed the Fund’s support for the next steps to accelerate the submission of the financing proposal.

The two parties also discussed the importance of activating the Regional Dialogue for Countries Affected by Fragility, Conflict and Violence (FCAS) as a platform to advance Yemen’s priority projects, led by Aden Desalination Project, energy projects and the possibility of utilizing Readiness financing to support the preparation of a desalination roadmap, including feasibility studies, institutional coordination and private sector participation.

Minister al-Sharjabi reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with the Fund to develop adaptation programs, build national capacities and enhance the resilience of local communities.

For his part, the Climate Fund's Regional Director praised the Yemeni government’s continued climate efforts despite the challenges, affirming the Fund’s commitment to increasing its support for Yemen.

He affirmed financing projects that directly improve livelihoods and strengthen resilience, and continuing coordination with national authorities to facilitate Yemen’s access to climate financing.
