NAIROBI-SABA
The Yemeni government has urged the international community to provide support to rebuild the country's housing sector, which has been severely damaged by the ongoing conflict.
In a statement delivered at the second resumed session of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) Assembly, Abdul Salam Al-Awadhi, Chargé d'Affaires of the Yemeni Embassy in Nairobi and Permanent Representative to UN-Habitat, highlighted the devastating impact of the war on Yemen's infrastructure and housing.
"The war has resulted in the displacement of over 4 million citizens and the destruction of thousands of residential units," Al-Awadhi said. "We need international support to rebuild our housing sector and create new partnerships that contribute to stability and development."
Despite the challenges, the Yemeni Ministry of Public Works and Roads has implemented housing projects for low-income families in cooperation with partners. However, Al-Awadhi emphasized that more needs to be done to address the housing crisis in Yemen.
"Housing is not just about walls, it's a foundation for peace, justice, and the future," Al-Awadhi said. "We call on the international community to provide support to rebuild our housing sector and help us achieve stability and development."
