President al-Alimi starts state-visit to Russian Federation
[27/05/2025 02:10]
ADEN - SABA
His Excellency President Dr. Rashad al-Alimi, Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) starts today, Tuesday, an official visit to the Russian Federation in response to an invitation from His Excellency President Vladimir Putin.

An official source at the Office of the Republic Presidency told the Yemeni News Agency (Saba) the Chairman of the PLC is going to hold talks with the President Putin aimed to further boost the bilateral relations and coordinate the positions toward a number of the issues of common interest, first and foremost is the developments of the Yemeni file, the efforts to establish peace and regional and international security.

The official source praised the long-standing and robust relations between the Republic of Yemen and the Russian Federation, deeply appreciating Moscow's steadfast position in support of the Yemeni people and its internationally recognized government and leadership at different international stages.

The source stated that the President visit program is set to include meetings with a number of the senior officials of the Russian government and political and diplomatic institutions as well as the intellectual bodies which are interested in the Yemen and its cultural heritage.

The presidential visit comes within the course of the active political and diplomatic efforts and communications led by the Chairman of the PLC , its members and the government to boost the unanimity of the international community toward the Yemeni case and to mobilize the needed efforts to put an end of the Yemeni people's suffering, restore the state's institutions and establish, security, stability, peace and development.

The visit is viewed as an important turning point in the course of the Yemeni-Russian relationship whose roots dated back to the first third of the previous century, as Yemen was the first Arab country to establish political the former Soviet Union
Historical sources indicate that the first official contact between the two sides occurred in 1927, before culminating in the signing of the Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation in 1928, which the two countries will celebrate the centenary of three years from now.

But the most important shift in the relations between the two friendly countries was in 1955 with the announcement of the establishment of diplomatic relations between them, which was followed in 1956 by the appointment of the first non-resident minister plenipotentiary for Yemen in Moscow.

In return, the Soviet Union opened its mission in Taiz in the same year. With this step, the relations began to grow along an upward trajectory of active partnership on all commercial, economic, diplomatic, and military levels.

With the launch of the September 26 Revolution in 1962 and the declaration of the Republican regime, the Soviet Union rushed to recognize the new Yemeni regime on October 1, just 6 days after the eternal September Revolution, which Moscow quickly supported and announced the opening of its embassy in Sana'a in the same year.

When the October 14 revolution of 1963 broke out in occupied South Yemen, the Soviet Union supported it . Just four days after the British evacuation on November 30, 1967, the Soviet Union announced its recognition of the independence of South Yemen.

The relations between the two parts of Yemen and the Soviet Union achieved a new qualitative leap based on a legal framework represented by the treaties of friendship and cooperation, along with other bilateral documents, before the Soviet Union actively supported the voluntary merger on May 22, 1990.

On December 30, 1991, the Republic of Yemen officially announced its recognition of the Russian Federation as the legitimate successor of the former Soviet Union, which includes Yemen's recognition of all valid international treaties and agreements.

The Russian Federation has remained a key supporter of the choices of the Yemeni people at various stages and has established close relations with Yemen at all levels.

After the Houthi militia coup in September 2014, Russia stood - and still stands - alongside the internationally recognized government and leadership, voting in favor of relevant international resolutions, in a level of consensus rarely seen from the international community in support of Yemeni legitimacy and rejection of the coup.
