Geneva - Saba
The Director of the National Program for Mine Action, Brigadier General Amin Al Aqili has warned that 66 teams working in the field of mine clearance in several governorates have stopped work, as a result of the lack of support provided by donor countries in light of the Houthi militia's continued cultivation of mines.
Al-Aqili said in Yemen's speech at the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention (APMBC) Inter-Sessional meetings in Geneva, "One of the most important challenges facing Yemen towards its obligations to Article 5 of the Mine Ban Treaty is the increase in the level of mine contamination and the possibility of inaccessibility to some areas as a result of the security conditions and also the new technologies used by the militia, such as the emergence of types of innovative explosive devices and the different priorities of response to the liberated areas.
He added, "There are economic difficulties facing our country in the field of mine clearance, especially the executive center of the National Program for Mine Action, due to the cessation of international support, and this may cause a halt to the work of 66 teams involved in various mine action activities, which will create an impact on the level of achievement."
Al-Aqeeli called for taking into account the conditions that our country suffers from, hoping for the generous support of brothers and friends in countries and humanitarian organizations to stand with Yemen and help it fulfill its obligations to the Convention on the Banning of Anti-Personnel Mines and towards its obligations to Article 5 of the Convention.
