The Mauritanian authorities announced the death of 89 migrants, the loss of dozens of others and rescue of some after their boat sank off the coast of the country this week.
The official Mauritanian News Agency reported, citing an informed source, that the Mauritanian Coast Guard was able to recover the bodies of 89 migrants who were on board a large traditional fishing boat that ran aground on Monday (July 1) on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, 4 km from the city of Ndiago.
The agency indicated that the Mauritanian Coast Guard treated nine people, including a 5-year-old girl. Reports stated that the boat was carrying about 170 migrants, who set sail from the border between Senegal and Gambia aiming for perilous journey to Europe. The agency indicated that the number of missing people may be 72.
