Leaders of the BRICS countries China, India, Russia, Brazil and South Africa announced the expansion of the grouping to include the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Egypt , the United Arab Emirates, Argentina, , Ethiopia, Iran as new members at a news conference during its 15th Summit in Johannesburg on Thursday.

The Chinese President Xi Jipining whose country is the largest in the group of the leading non-western emerging economies described the move as a historic saying " the move marks a new starting point for BRICS cooperation and will inject newitality into the mechanism of BRICS cooperation, further strengthening the forces of global peace and development ".

The six countries' membership will take effect on Jan 1, 2024, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced at a press conference.

BRICS leaders met in Johannesburg from Aug 22 to 24 to discuss issues including deepening BRICS cooperation and the group's expansion
