Parliament Speaker, UN's Envoy discuss peace efforts
[04/06/2023 07:51]
RIYADH-SABA
Speaker of Parliament Sultan al-Barakani along with Deputy Speaker Mohssen BaSarrah and Heads of Parliamentary blocs held discussions today, Sunday, with the UN's Envoy to Yemen Hans Grundberg over the ongoing peace efforts.

Mr. Grundberg provided an overview about his efforts and consultations he has made during his recent visits to the concerned countries in the region in addition to the United States and China.

He stated that his office now is working on the different visions and proposals in view of what will come out of the ongoing Saudi and Omani efforts as well as his own good offices. He noted that even though the Yemeni crisis is extremely complicated the UN is determined to reach the comprehensive political settlement which is to serve the Yemeni peoples' interest, stop bloodshed, maintain Yemen's security, stability, unity and its territorial integrity.

Mr. Grundberg confirmed that all topical issues will be discussed but priorities will be given to the arrangements of the stated first phase to be arranged completely and precisely to ensure successfully and credibly reaching the second and third phases.

He said that he is optimistic about the Saudi and Omani role and good offices, and the truce which has been held until now means that the parties are willing to reach the peace and the Yemeni people deserve the comprehensive peace after these long years of the war.

The Speaker of Parliament has made it clear that the peace option is the ideal choice but the problem is that the partner who believes in peace has never been in existence because the Houthis are not earnestly seeking peace, they are moving from one position to another, they are raising the humanitarian situation while they are acting inhumanely, this is clearly evidenced in their besiege of Taiz for throughout all these years. While Sana'a airport and Hodeidah seaports are widely open, the Houthis have not observed any article of Stockholm Agreement which has rescued the Houthis.

Al-Barakani said" We want the peace that is based on the three terms of peace references which preserves the Republican regime, Yemen's unity and its territorial integrity, peace that is based on justice, democracy, freedom and human rights not based on the claim of the divine right, while the government has fulfilled its obligations under the previous agreements, the Houthis have not yet fulfilled any of their obligations".

The Speaker of Parliament has confirmed the Parliament's support for the UN envoy's good offices and all efforts to make peace.

He said" It is unfair that the international community allows the Houthis to stop oil exports meanwhile it is forcing the legitimate government to allow the ships laden with oil and goods to unload their shipments in the Hodeidah seaports to enable the Houthis to collect billions of Rials of taxes and illegal levies".
