UN envoy expresses regret over failure on extending truce

The UN Envoy for Yemen Hans Grundberg expressed extreme regret over failure of extending the humanitarian truce after the militia made demands could not be met.

In his recent briefing to the Security Council on Thursday, Grundberg praised the government of Yemen for good interaction with the proposal of the renewal of the truce, began early last April.

He reviewed the positive results of the truce, which included alleviating suffering of Yemeni people and produced new chances on building confidence and working on finding peaceful settlement to the conflict, pointing out that efforts has been exerted since last July do not only aim for exendin the truce but also for elaborating its elements and building on it.

He pointed out that on 18th of September, he made proposals to the parties to extend the truce for six months and elaborating its elements and in weeks preceded the second of October, he doubled his discussions with the parties and caried out a number of negotiating rounds in Sana'a, Aden, Muscat and Riyadh.

Then he shared with them a revised proposal on the first of October, pointing out that the proposal was meeting prime demands and competing ones to both parties equally and included stop all aggressive operations, enhancing activities of the coordinating committee as channel for de-escalation.

He also pointed out that his proposal included creating structures for commencing the talks on the economic issues, permanent ceasefire and resuming inclusive political process under Yemeni command for working for finding a permanent solution to the conflict.
