Presidential Council discusses state of food security and containing repercussions

The Presidential Leadership Council, headed by His Excellency President Dr. Rashad Muhammad Al-Alimi, Chairman of the Council, continued to discuss the local developments and the necessary reforms in the economic, service and institutional sectors.

The meeting was held in the presence of the members of the Council, Aidarous Al -Zubaidi, Abdul Rahman Al -Muharrami, Dr. Abdullah Al -Alimi, Othman Majali, and through the visual communication circle, Sultan Al -Arada, and Tariq Saleh, while council member Faraj Al -Bahsni was absent with excuse.

The Presidential Leadership Council heard a briefing from Foreign Minister Dr. Ahmed bin Mubarak, regarding his meeting today, Tuesday in the temporary capital, Aden, with the United Nations Special Envoy, Hans Grundberg, during which Minister bin Mubarak affirmed the position of the political leadership and the government regarding the peace efforts and the existing humanitarian truce, and the procedures and guarantees.

And the international and international pressures required to compel the Houthi militias to implement the terms of the armistice, especially the opening of the Taiz crossings and the rest of the governorates, before moving on to discuss any other topics.

The Council was briefed on sectoral reports on the global crisis and its repercussions on Yemeni food security, including severe bottlenecks in supply chains, and the resulting increases in the prices of food and energy commodities, fertilizers and agricultural inputs. The report showed a significant increase in the wheat import bill from 700 million dollars in 2019, to one billion and 858 million dollars during 2020 and 2021, respectively, while the bill for importing basic food commodities rose to three billion and 23 million dollars.

The Council commended the government’s measures to confront the repercussions of the global food crisis, and directed more measures to secure alternative sources and markets for importing grains, improving control measures on food prices, strengthening the social protection network, and humanitarian relief in cooperation and coordination with regional and international agencies and organizations.
