Saudi Arabia, US confirm support for Presidential Leadership Council

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and President Joseph Biden of the United States of America affirmed their support for the Presidential Leadership Council in Yemen.

King Salman and President Biden expressed in a joint statement issued today between the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United States of America, on the sidelines of US President Joe Biden’s visit to the Kingdom and his meeting with the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, King of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and the Crown Prince Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, expressed their thanks to the Presidential Council for its commitment to the truce and the steps that contributed to improving the lives of Yemenis throughout the country, including facilitating the import of fuel and the resumption of flights from Sana'a.

They renewed their firm support for the truce in Yemen is mediated by the United Nations stressing the importance of its continuation and making progress to turn it into a permanent peace agreement. US President Joe Biden expressed his appreciation for the role of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, and Crown Prince, His Royal Highness Prince Muhammad bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, in achieving and renewing the truce.

The Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and the US President affirmed their long-stated goal to end the war in Yemen. They called on the international community to take a unified position calling on the Houthis to return to peace talks under the auspices of the United Nations, based on the three references, including Security Council Resolution 2216 issued in the year 2015, as the political agreement between the Yemeni parties is the guarantee to permanently resolve the conflict and reverse the severe humanitarian crisis.

The two sides also stressed the need to remove all obstacles to the flow of basic commodities and the delivery of aid inside Yemen, and the importance of the Houthis opening the main roads leading to Taiz, the third largest city in Yemen, which has been under siege since 2015.

The statement indicated that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United States encouraged all regional actors to provide full support for the truce, which resulted in the longest period of peace in Yemen during the past six years, and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia welcomed the United States' support for the truce and its contribution to efforts to advance the political process in Yemen.
