The Republic of Yemen has welcomed the International Security Council's resolution no (2624) issued today about the extension of the UN Yemen Sanctions and the term of the Panel Sanction established in pursuant to the Security Council resolution no 2140 of 2014.
The resolution designated Houthi militias as a terrorist group for the first time, blacklisting it in the UN Security Council sanctions in a response to the grave violations these militias have committed including the terrorist attacks on the civilians, civil facilities in Yemen, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates, exercising sexual violence against women, recruiting children and engaging them in frontline battles, planting landmines, impeding humanitarian aids delivery and recurrent deliberate attacks against civil and commercial ships in the Red Sea.
The Yemeni government stated that this resolution is set to curb the Houthis' violations and threats to the maritime shipping lines' safety in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. It described this resolution as a significant constructive move to mount pressures upon the Houthi militias in order to abandon the war option, return to the peace process.
The Yemeni government reiterated its assertion that the UN-led peace process is the only single way to reach fair and sustainable peace in Yemen that is based on the agreed to terms of reference for political settlement including the GCC's Initiative, its executive mechanism, outcomes of National Dialogue and the UNSCRs in relevance, namely 2216.
