Al-Sharjabi discusses with UN tasks of international experts on facing Safir disaster

Minister of Water and Environment Tawfeeq al-Sharjabi discussed Tuesday with representative of the UNDP in Aden tasks of international experts entrusted with evaluating national capabilities to respond to potential oil leaks or explosion of Safir, the long-stranded oil tanker on the Red Sea off Hodeida Coasts.

Al-Sharjabi talked with the international expert on oil outflow Dr. Samiah al-Duaij on mechanism of tasks of the UN experts in the framework of supporting the national strategy to avoid or face a potential disaster of Safir Oil Tanker and evaluating current national capabilities to face the disaster.

He confirmed keenness of the government on easing the experts' tasks to evaluate the expected environmental damages and necessary resources to face the environmental pollution within local and international cooperation after stop of maintenance work of the tanker since Houthi militia's coup in 2014.

For her part, the international expert provided details of her duties of providing technical consultation to concerned national bodies in field of strategic work to face the disaster and evaluate national capabilities and response to oil leaks, as well as measuring readiness to protect expected affected areas.
