A Yemeni official has called upon the international community to pressure the Houthi theocratic putschists to stop planting landmines after they have caused a humanitarian disaster.

In a statement to Saba, the director of the National Mine Action Program Ameen Al-Aqeeli said the militia’s landmines have killed 8 thousand civilians including women, children and elderly and wounded more over the past six years.

He said 61 of his crew “have lost their lives and a large number of others have sustained wounds.”
Al-Aqeeli said that “large swaths of the territories recently liberated from Houthi control in Taiz have been found mine contaminated.”

He said this means that all territories still under Houthi control are now contaminated with large numbers of landmines.

He said “the program’s branch in Taiz has already sent a team to clear the contaminated lands with whatever resources they have in their hands and they have begun their work in Almaafer, Alkadahah, Al-Akamah to prepare for a safe return of the IDPs back to their villages and safe delivery of food and medical provisions.”
