The director of Yemen’s National Mine Action Program said, “Vast swaths of Yemen’s lands are contaminated with” landmines laid by the coupist Houthi rebel militia.
In an address to the Mine Ban Treaty Eighteenth Meeting of States Parties in the UN, Brig. Gen. Ameen Al Aqeeli said, “Vast swaths have been found contaminated: Cities, villages, roads, public facilities, water sources, pastures, agricultural lands.”
The landmines have “killed and injured civilians in large numbers.” He said his center is struggling with lack of resources and needs to open branches in Marib and Taiz, two key flashpoints in the Yemeni conflict.
Government sources say the Houthi militia have planted over one million landmines in the country over the past six years.
