ADEN-SABA
Yemen has called upon the UN particularly the UN peace mediator to Yemen Martin Griffiths to pressure Houthis into sparing the national economy the ongoing conflict the armed militia is fighting with the government.
In a statement to Saba, Information Minister Muammar al-Eryani warned of "the Iran-backed militia's recent decision to ban and criminalize the circulation of the (newly printed) banknotes in the militias area of control."
Al-Eryani said the militia's decision "part of the policy the militia has maintained since its military coup (on 21 September 2014) to destroy the national economy and undermine the government's efforts to stop the collapse of the national currency" and also undermine all the UN's past efforts and arrangements with the national Economic Committee to prop up the national economy.
He said the Houthis' harm is reaching the ordinary people now, given that the militia has confiscated the savings of bank customers under the pretext of replacing the paper money with e-money.
