As the World Press Freedom Day falls on May 3, the Houthi war against journalists and journalism in Yemen continues unabated.
The rebel militia have in their jails dozens of journalists rounded up since they overthrew the government in September 2014 and triggered the current war months later. They are keeping the manhunt for the fugitives. Over the past years the militia killed 20 journalists and wiped out press freedom in their areas of control.
Yemen's Journalists Syndicate documented more than 814violations of press freedom since 2015 against reporters, photojournalists, newspapers, online news sites, social networking activists and premises of media outlets.
The journalists were killed, abducted, assaulted and intimidated. News websites were blocked. A repression act that the country has not witnessed in two decades. The worst that journalists may face at the hands of Houthis after killing is prolonged detention and torture in jail. Which is happening to several journalists now.
