RIYADH- SABA
Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates announced on Monday the allocation of US$ 200 million to meet the urgent humanitarian needs in Yemen over the coming weeks.
The General Supervisor of King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabiah and the UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation Reem Al-Hashemy announced the allocation at a press conference in the Saudi capital on Monday.
The initiative is meant to cover the sectors of food, nutrition, health and livelihood support.
It earmarked $ 140 million to provide immediate food needs through the World Food Program, $ 40 million to treat acute maternal and child malnutrition and to provide environmental sanitation through the UNICEF, and $ 20 million to combat cholera and procure intravenous fluids through the World Health Organization.
Al-Rabiah, said the Arab Coalition countries, particularly Saudi Arabia and the UAE are striving to alleviate the suffering the severe crisis Yemen is going through due to the Houthi militia's failure to honor the latest peace deal (the Stockholm Agreement) and the militia's exploitation of the humanitarian crisis for military and political gains.
The UAE Minister said that this support will focus largely on women. Mothers and women generally occupy a high place in foreign aid programs because of their prominent and pivotal role in providing efficient assistance and building the social fabric.
She pointed out that the Houthi militia has been putting setbacks in the road to delivering humanitarian aid to the needy.
