RABAT-SABA
An international symposium about the situations of educational, cultural and media institutions in Yemen is going to start its sessions in the Moroccan capital Rabat.
The function is organized by the Yemeni embassy in Morocco in cooperation with the Islamic Organization for Education, Sciences and Culture(ISESCO).
The symposium is intended to spot lights on the violations and damages that cultural and educational sectors and institutions in Yemen have suffered since Houthi militia carried out the coup and triggered the devastating civil war in 2014.
A number of academics, specialists and representatives of diplomatic corps in Morocco are going to contribute to the discussions.
Yemen's ambassador in Morocco Az Adin Al-Asbahi said" The symposium is an outcome of fruitful cooperation between the embassy and the ISESCO, namely with its Director Dr Abdulaziz Attowigry who has always been very keen to get the ISESCO playing a significant role in supporting Yemen and defending its resources and culture".
Al-Asbahi rightly argued that international political and media attention has often been largely paid to violations of political rights, while cultural and educational topics rarely have drawn attention, if any, though these sectors have seriously affected by the ongoing conflict.
To support his argument Al-Asbahi noted that there are some three million Yemeni child outside schools, nearly 200 thousand teachers have been unpaid their salaries for two years, 1600 schools destroyed 3600 more shut down.
Moreover, higher education also seriously affected where educational process has been systematically damaged, 66 professors dismissed and lost their jobs. Several museums in Dhamar, Taiz, Sana'a, Aden and elsewhere have been destroyed and looted as current war has created ideal environment for antiquities smuggling.
