The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Yemen has warned of increased mortality among kidney failure patients due to the ongoing armed Houthi insurgency.

In a press conference held by the Ministry of Health in the temporary capital Aden, the ICRC's head of delegation Morazzani, and health coordinator in Yemen, Maria delPilar, said on Wednesday that the mortality rate has reached 25% since the start of the war in 21 March 2015.

She said that it is important to afford support for dialysis centers in order to maintain the stability of health for thousands of people suffering from renal failure.

They pointed out that thousands of Yemeni patients face neglect and difficulties arising from the ongoing war that has damaged the health sector and led to the closure of half the country's healthcare facilities.

They said that dialysis centers are available in 15 out of 23 Yemeni provinces. Twenty-eight out of 32 dialysis centers are currently operating, and the ICRC currently supports 5 dialysis centers in Sana'a, Aden, Shabwa, Mahweet and Hajjah.

For his part, the director of the Public Health and Population Ministry office in Aden, Dr. Jamal Khadabakhsh, pointed out that renal failure patients in Yemen are in a disastrous situation .

He said that the conflict rendered the Ministry absent in some regions of the country.

He stressed that the government is keen to prepare a quick plan and a clear vision to improve the services needed for dialysis patients.
