Deputy Governor of Mareb Mohammad al-Ma'odhi, along with Director of Agriculture and Irrigation Minister's Office here Saif al-Wales, inaugurated on Sunday plantation of Jojoba tree at Mareb's valley.
The Jojoba Plant or Jojoba, scientifically named Simmodsia chinensis, is part of the Simmondsiaceae family and this plant is native to the desert areas in California, Arizona and Mexico, as well as certain parts of Africa. This plant is commercially grown for the oil that can be extracted from its seeds. The extracts of its oil are also used in cosmetic drugs industry.
International Jojoba Company supported planting the tree in Yemen within cooperation in this field.
The trees have been planted at Al Miqan, the Valley District, where a special farm has been allocated for planting 240 trees.
Agricultural sector in Mareb is promising for investment, said al-Ma'odhi in the inauguration ceremony, noting that planting oil trees is another unique activity to farmers. He pointed out that choosing Mareb by the company for planting the tree suggests that the province has investment capabilities in agricultural field.
This farm is the second after inaugurating the first at Joba District, said al-Wales, pointing out that after harvesting the fruit, the company will make partnership with farmers and providing them with modern irrigation system.
Mohammad Alama, the Director of the company’s branch in Yemen, said the inauguration of the plant in Mareb comes after successful experiment in nearby Jawf of similar environment.
