Govt says impediments, formation of paramilitary militias violates UNSC resolution
[01/02/2018 01:35]

ADEN-SABA
The Government said that the impediments to its function and the formation of paramilitary militias is a violation of the UN Security Council's resolution 2216 on Yemen.

Commenting on the Southern Transitional Council's rebellion acts that drew close to a complete coup d'état against the government in the temporary capital Aden by Tuesday, the Ministry of Foreign issued a statement on Thursday calling what happened "a failed coup attempt."

The statement said: "The Republic of Yemen considers the coup attempt committed by the rebels in Aden, the continuous acts to undermine and impede the work of the legitimate government and the formation of armed militias outside the command of the Armed Forces a blatant violation of the UNSC resolution no. 2216 (2015)."

"Such acts threaten the security of the region, violate the principle goal for which the Arab Coalition … was established."

The statement thanked the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia which mediated the withdrawal of the rebels from government military brigades they had seized. The statement also thanked the brotherly and friendly countries that condemned the rebellion.

The government called on all brotherly and friendly countries to continue supporting Yemen in these hard times in accordance with the international resolutions.

Tensions spilled over into open warfare over the weekend on the streets of Aden, the southern city that has served as the government’s de facto capital.

Separatist forces took over much of the city and by Tuesday evening they had surrounded the presidential palace, where the country’s prime minister, Ahmed bin Dagher, and several other senior government ministers were holed up.
