FM expresses govt'sconcern about escalating Houthi abuses in Sana'a

Foreign Minister Abdul-Malik al-Mekhlafi has expressed the government's concern about the escalating human rights abuses by Houthis in the capital Sana'a.

In a meeting with the EU Head of Delegation to Yemen Antonia Calvo-Puertain Riyadh on Monday, al-Mekhlafi pointed to the Houthi atrocities that the militia'shorrific abuses; murdering and arresting of oppositionists including MPs and political figures and blowing up their houses in north Yemen following the start of mass defections to the government's side in late November.

Al-Mekhlafi said the militiacommitted abuses against women protests in a bid to suppress them.

He said that the government is keen on preserve all the stakeholders and involve them in countering the militia, reversing their coup and restoring the state.

He renewed the government's commitment to make all the land and sea ports at the disposal of humanitarian aid and ensure that aid reaches the citizens. He said that currently Yemenis buy humanitarian aid from the black market, as it is the norm that Houthis receive the aid and sell it to raise funds for their insurgency.

Al-Mekhlafi also renewed the government's support to the UN to secure a fair lasting political settlement based on the three relevant references; the GCC Agreement, the UNSC resolutions on Yemen and the outcomes of the National Dialogue Conference.
