A research team from the Environmental Protection Authority in Socotra and the UNEP project said that increased number of dead fishes washed ashore on the beaches of the Yemeni archipelago located in the Indian Ocean could be caused by the red tide.
A red spot of insufficient oxygen forms in the sea which sends fish to unconsciousness and sometimes direct death as a result, the team explained.
The team assigned to investigate the matter did not rule out that the deaths could have been caused by abusive forms of fishing that are used by illegal foreign fishing vessels. The testimonies of eyewitnesses who saw foreign vessels promote this hypothesis, according to the team.
