Geneva seminar highlights plight of Yemeni journalists

Senior Yemeni and non-Yemeni journalists have highlighted in a seminar in Geneva the plight the Yemeni journalists have been enduring since the Saleh-Houthi fanatical militias completed their coup d'état in 2st September 2014.

The seminar was organized - on the sideline of the HRC's 36th session – by Yemen's Information Ministry, the International Federation for Journalists IFJ and the Federation of Arab Journalists FAJ under the theme "The Statusof Yemeni Media After the Coup D'état."

Minister of Information Muammar al-Eryani said that after the coup, journalists and media institutions, public and private, were subject to heinous abuses that infringe all the humanitarian and moral values.

The IFJ's former president, Jim Boumelha, said more than 700 Yemeni journalists had to leave the country after the militias began rounding up and forcibly disappearing journalists.

He called for investigation to the militias' abuses against journalists and for stopping ongoing abuses including the death sentence against veteran reporter AbduraqeebAljubeihi.

The chief Morocco Journalists Association Abdullah al-Bkkali said Yemen comes in the fourth highest in the countries list in terms of the number of journalists killed.

The former chief of Yemen's Journalists Syndicate Mahboob Ali said that "never before has Yemen's journalism seen such a plight and abuses that amount to war crimes against journalists ."

He said that journalists freedom of expression has been subjected to confiscation, regardless of these journalists political affiliations.

Member of the syndicate Nabil al-Oseidi cited the case of Mohammed al-Absi who was poisoned to death by carbon oxide gas as a case-in-point in the militias' innovative modus operandi of annihilating journalism.
