Yemeni orgs want retaining of HR Abuse Investigation Committee retained
[06/09/2017 02:32]
ADEN-SABA

As many as 70 human rights organizations and advocacy groups have called on the UN Commission on Human Rights (UNCHR) to retain the National Committee for Investigating into Alleged Human Rights Abuses.

In a statement to Saba, the organizations said they handed over an appeal "to the UNCHR to retain the Committee in business given the fact that it fulfills the interest in an independent national probe into alleged abuses."

The organizations said the Committee has gone a long way in its investigations over the past years despite the big challenges.

The statement read: "Going for an international investigation panel will only incur more fault lines in the Yemeni society and will constitute an international backdown from supporting the government and political settlement.

This gives the coup militias the chance to ignore the international humanitarian law and human rights laws, which exposes the international peace and security to danger."

The statement warned that "the formation of an international investigation committee will lead to the loss of the Yemeni cause by making it the business of other powers, which will prolong the war, increase the humanitarian suffering and disasters and even political standoff."
