CAIRO-SABA
The Secretary General of the Arab Medical Union has said that the Union is preparing a proposal to study the health and environmental situation of Yemen within the next three months as a first step to combat cholera.
Dr. Osama Ruslan called on the international and Arab health authorities to address the raging epidemic in Yemen before it spills over to other countries.
Ruslan made the remarks during a press conference held in Cairo Wednesday on the health situation in Yemen.
The conference comes at a time when the World Health Organization announced that the cholera infection cases in Yemen have reached 400 thousand and deaths to 1900 cases during the past three months.
The WHO had also noted that more than two Yemeni children, and more than 60% of the whole population face acute malnutrition, cholera, as well as other diseases such as meningitis, dengue and hemorrhagic fever.
The Assistant Secretary General of the Union, Dr. Abdul Qawi Al-Shamiri, said Yemen has five thousand health institutions, half of them are small health units and are almost out of business, given the security situation of armed conflict in the country.
Al-Shamairi called on the regional and international health agencies to intervene and join efforts to guard against the spillover of Yemen diseases and to surrounding countries.
He stressed that the solution is to make a quality leap in services especially by rehabilitating and equipping 1400 health centers at a cost of $ 100 million.
