Aden safe for UNDP to operate, relief chairwoman says

The deputy chairwoman of the Supreme Committee for Relief Ibtihaj al-Kamal has said that the temporary capital city, Aden, is stable and secure for the UNDP to start its functions from.

In a meeting with the UNDP Deputy Country DirectorVakhtangSvanidze and the head of UNDP Sub-Office in Aden, Sylvain Merlen, al-Kamal, who is also the minister of social affairs, highlighted the setback for UNDP functions in Taiz and Hodeidah because of the rebel Saleh-Houthi militias' control.

The UNDP dep. director affirmed that the UNDP will begin to carry out activities in a number of provinces, Aden, Taiz, Hodeidah and Sana'a, as test provinces, to be followed by other provinces.

The meeting, attended also by the chairman of the Relief Committee, Aburraqqeeb Fatah, discussed the UNDP's planned local development projects.

It focused on the organization's multifaceted emergency response programs; cash-for-labor, job opportunity creation and small enterprises support.

Fatah, on his part, affirmed the government's readiness to cooperate with the UNDP in accordance with the International Labor Organization standards in this respect.
