Taiz Emergency Committee: Flood Losses Estimated at $15 Million
[22/04/2026 06:09]

TAIZ- SABA
The Deputy Governor of Taiz for Technical Affairs Eng. Mohib A al-Hakimi reviewed Wednesday the report of the governorate’s Emergency Committee regarding the flood disasters that affected several districts, causing losses estimated at $15 million.

At a press conference, al-Hakimi presented the committee’s report, which detailed the extent of damages and losses caused by the floods, their humanitarian impact on residents, and the effects on housing, roads, education, heritage, food security and water sectors.

He explained that the floods resulted in 24 deaths and affected 31,260 families, highlighting the widespread damage across various vital sectors.

He noted that the total estimated cost of the damages reached $15,089,097.

Al-Hakimi stressed that the floods are not an isolated emergency but part of a pattern of chronic vulnerability linked to climate change, deteriorating infrastructure, rising food insecurity, limited local institutional capacity for monitoring and early response, and widening gaps in both institutional and community preparedness.

He also pointed to a number of urgent measures taken by the local authority to assist those affected, both at the local level and through coordination with relevant authorities in the temporary capital, Aden, aimed at accelerating response efforts and easing the suffering of those impacted.

The committee further reviewed the efforts made by various entities to address the disaster’s consequences, along with presenting a comprehensive needs matrix across sectors and identifying urgent priorities within a proactive framework designed to reduce future damage and minimize its impact.
