Member of the Presidential Leadership Council Lieutenant General Mahmoud Salem al-Subaihi received Head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Office in Yemen Mohammed Nasri.
He discussed with him a number of issues related to the situation of refugees and host communities, as well as ways to strengthen cooperation and coordination between the government and the UNHCR.
The member of the Presidential Leadership Council discussed with the UN official the commitments of the Republic of Yemen made at the Global Refugee Forum and ways to translate them into practical programs that enhance the humanitarian response and support efforts for stability and development.
The meeting also addressed the principles of the Global Compact on Refugees and the importance of international responsibility-sharing in supporting host countries.
It further reviewed the situation at the Kharaz refugee camp in Lahj Governorate, including challenges related to the needs of refugees and the host community and ways to strengthen programs that contribute to improving basic services and supporting stability in the area.
The member of the Presidential Leadership Council emphasized the importance of strengthening partnerships with the UNHCR and international organizations in a way that supports the government’s efforts to address humanitarian challenges and improve living conditions for refugees and host communities in various regions.

al-Subaihi stressed the need for United Nations agencies to play a greater role in supporting state institutions, building their capacities, and improving public services in accordance with their mandates and responsibilities, thereby enhancing institutional work and achieving a more effective response to humanitarian challenges.
The member of the Presidential Leadership Council also stressed importance of transitioning from emergency humanitarian response to sustainable development and recovery programs, and strengthening the presence of United Nations representatives and operations from the temporary capital Aden.
He also pointed to the importance of continued support from the international community for Yemen in light of the current challenges, expressing hope that regional and international developments would not lead to a reduction or diversion of attention and support provided to the Yemeni people and their humanitarian and development needs.
For his part, the Head of the UNHCR Office in Yemen affirmed the agency’s commitment to continuing work and coordination with the Yemeni government to support refugees and host communities and to strengthen programs that contribute to improving their living conditions, in line with the principles of partnership and shared responsibility.
