Britain Welcomes President’s Call to Hold Conference for Southern Components, Renews Support for Yemen’s

The UK Minister of State for the Middle East and North Africa, Hamish Falconer has welcomed the call by His Excellency President Dr. Rashad Mohammed al-Alimi, the Chairman of the Presidential Leadership Council, to convene a comprehensive conference for the southern components.

He also welcomed Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s hosting of the conference.

In an oral briefing before the British Parliament on Tuesday, Minister Falconer renewed the United Kingdom’s commitment to supporting the unity of Yemen, the Presidential Leadership Council and the Yemeni government.

He noted that Britain is closely monitoring the situation in Yemen, stressing that reaching a swift diplomatic solution is the most appropriate course to serve the Yemeni people.

The UK Minister of State pointed out that Yemen is facing one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world, with 18.1 million people suffering from acute food insecurity.

He affirmed that responding to this crisis is a priority for the United Kingdom, explaining that Britain is the largest donor to Yemen’s humanitarian response plan and is committed to providing £139 million in humanitarian assistance during the current fiscal year.
