Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Fishery Wealth, Salem al-Soqatri discussed Thursday with a delegation from the World Food Program (WFP) in Yemen ways to strengthen partnership and expand projects supporting the agricultural and fishery sectors.

The minister reviewed the impacts of climate change on the agricultural and fisheries sectors in Yemen, as a developing country that relies heavily on traditional agriculture—accounting for more than 70 percent of total production.

He highlighted the national strategies prepared by the ministry on food security, the national strategy for livestock and veterinary health, and mechanisms to combat transboundary diseases, developed with the participation of local and international experts specializing in agriculture and fisheries.

Al-Soqatri affirmed the ministry’s commitment to providing all necessary facilities to organizations working in the two sectors, in a way that contributes to improving services for beneficiaries and developing the agricultural and fisheries production environment.

For its part, the WFP delegation emphasized the importance of its partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Fishery Wealth, noting that the program places special focus on expanding its projects in Yemen due to the difficult conditions the country is going through.

The program is committed to continuing rapid-intervention projects alongside developing long-term plans for development that support the agricultural and fisheries sectors in Yemen, the delegation said.
