Taiz Deputy Governorate discusses with Resident Representative for Humanitarian Affairs strengthening partnership

The First Deputy of Taiz Governorate Dr. Abdulqawi al-Mikhlafi discussed Thursday with the United Nations Resident Representative and Humanitarian Coordinator in Yemen Julian Harness strengthening the partnership and future cooperation between the governorate and the United Nations.

During the meeting, which was attended by the Director General of the Governorate Police, Brigadier General Mansour al-Akhali, al-Mikhlafi stressed that Taiz is not just an urgent humanitarian file, but rather a development issue and humanitarian justice that requires organized and continuous support.

He pointed out that the visit expresses the United Nations system's keenness to get closer to the reality of the governorate and understand its humanitarian and development needs closely.

Al-Mikhlafi pointed out that the governorate faces urgent challenges as a result of the war and siege by the terrorist Houthi militias and old challenges that have been rooted for decades, such as the water crisis, infrastructure, and basic services.

For his part, the UN official expressed his happiness to visit the governorate and learn closely about its reality and needs, especially interventions in the water sector, and the transition from emergency interventions to sustainable development in accordance with the governorate's economic and social development plan.

He stressed the importance of arranging a workshop to review and evaluate the development plan and determine priorities for the year 2026 with the participation of donors and UN agencies with the aim of mobilizing UN support to adopt the governorate's priorities of basic services, and raising diesel support for water wells to 82 thousand liters per month to confront the water crisis, with the necessity of working to find sustainable solutions in the water sector, most notably the seawater desalination project.

The directors of the offices of Planning and International Cooperation, Public Works and Roads, Water and Environment, Public Health and Population, the Relief Subcommittee, and Statistics reviewed the overall needs at the level of each sector, and the extent of future cooperation with the United Nations and its various organizations.
