Minister of Industry discusses with Secretary-General (UNCTAD) enhancing cooperation

Minister of Industry and Trade Mohammed al-Ashwal discussed Saturday with the Secretary-General of the United Nations Trade and Development Organization (UNCTAD) Rebecca Greenspan ways to enhance bilateral cooperation and support sustainable development in Yemen.

Minister al-Ashwal stressed during the meeting, held on the sidelines of the 16th UNCTAD conference held in Geneva, Switzerland, that (UNCTAD) played a pivotal role in supporting development paths around the world and had a prominent role in supporting Yemen in difficult times.

He praised Rebecca Greenspan's exceptional leadership of the organization and its outstanding efforts in supporting developing and least developed countries.

Minister al-Ashwal touched on the challenges facing Yemen in the economic and industrial fields, as the war sparked by the terrorist Houthi militias affected vital sectors such as industry and trade.

He stressed that the government has a clear vision to achieve sustainable economic development by enhancing national production and opening up to trade and investment.

The Minister presented a set of important proposals that contribute to supporting the Yemeni economy, which included preparing an analytical study on opportunities to develop the Yemeni industrial sector, implementing technical support and capacity building programs in the areas of export development, trade facilitation and attracting investments, developing a bilateral cooperation plan between the Yemeni Ministry of Industry and Trade and (UNCTAD) based on the outcomes of the conference, and allocating Yemen among the mechanisms to support the least developed countries in the organization, especially in the areas of finance and technology.

For her part, the Secretary-General of (UNCTAD) expressed her great appreciation for the efforts made by the Yemeni government in promoting economic development despite the difficult circumstances.

She confirmed that (UNCTAD) is committed to providing full support to Yemen in implementing its development strategies and the importance of continued cooperation between developing countr
