Gulf-European statement stresses importance of supporting Yemen' economy

The joint statement of the 29th Ministerial Meeting between the Gulf Cooperation Council and the European Union on Yemen and the Red Sea stressed the importance of the combined efforts of the Gulf Cooperation Council and European Union countries to mobilize humanitarian and development aid, enabling the Yemeni government to fulfill its obligations, restore economic stability and strengthen the role of the Central Bank of Yemen.

The joint statement stressed the importance of protecting regional airspace, maritime security and waterways, and confronting activities that threaten regional and global security, including attacks on commercial ships, threats to navigation, strikes on oil facilities or damage to vital infrastructure in the Red Sea.

He also expressed his deep concern about the worsening humanitarian crisis in Yemen.

The statement reiterated the importance of a principled humanitarian response, stressing the need to preserve humanitarian space and ensure the protection of civilians, including humanitarian workers, and civilian infrastructure throughout Yemen.

He pointed out that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia announced last September the provision of $368 million in new aid to Yemen through the Saudi Program for the Development and Reconstruction of Yemen, and more than 300 million euros from the European Union in ongoing support for Yemen and its people.

The joint statement stressed the urgent need to build economic resilience and create job opportunities for Yemenis.

"To this end, the European Union and the GCC countries are committed to developing deeper partnerships and identifying opportunities for trilateral cooperation that benefit Yemen," said the statement.

The 29th joint ministerial meeting between the Gulf Cooperation Council and the European Union kicked off yesterday, Monday, in the State of Kuwait, to discuss a number of regional and international issues of common interest, including developments in the Middle East region.

The meeting will also discusd ways to enhance trade and cooperation in the field of energy and combat climate change, in addition to following up on the implementation of the results of the first summit between the Gulf Cooperation Council and the European Union, which was held in Brussels last year.
