YORK - SABA
The Republic of Yemen participated in the high-level meeting on preventing and controlling non-communicable diseases and promoting mental health and quality of life, held on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York, with a delegation headed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriate Affairs, Dr. Shaya Zindani.

In his speech in Yemen, the Minister of Foreign Affairs affirmed the Yemeni government's readiness to work with all partners in a spirit of cooperation, in line with the country's capabilities, with a focus on the needs of least developed countries to build flexible and comprehensive health systems that respond to the needs of all, including those suffering from non-communicable diseases.

He pointed out that chronic diseases represent the main reason for the high rates of illness and death globally, as their effects are not limited to individuals only, but also place serious economic burdens on countries as a result of declining productivity and high treatment costs

He stressed that investing in prevention and control is one of the most effective and feasible ways, as it provides an enhancement of health and societal well-being and support for economic and social growth.

He pointed out that fragile environments and crisis areas, such as in Yemen, face increasing challenges in this area due to limited access to medicines, disruption of health systems and the accompanying large-scale displacement, which exposes patients with chronic diseases such as diabetes, blood pressure, heart disease and cancer to life-threatening risks as a result of the interruption of health care.

The Foreign Minister stressed that combating non-communicable diseases requires a collective effort that goes beyond the borders of one country.

He called for strengthening solidarity, joint action and exchange of experiences between governments, international organizations and the private sector.

He stressed that commitment to universal health coverage must be based on the principle of "no one should be left behind", including displaced people, residents of conflict areas, and patients who do not have the luxury of waiting for stability to return.
