UN Condemns Houthi Militia's Detention of UN Staff
[01/09/2025 01:08]
New YORK - SABA

The United Nations has strongly condemned the arbitrary detention of at least 11 UN staff members by the Iranian-backed Houthi militia in Yemen. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his deep concern over the incident, which occurred on August 31, in a statement.

Guterres denounced the storming of World Food Programme buildings and the seizure of UN property, as well as attempts to storm other UN premises in Sana'a. He emphasized that the continuation of such arbitrary arrests is unacceptable.

The Secretary-General renewed his call for the immediate and unconditional release of the detained staff members, as well as all UN personnel, international and national NGOs, civil society organizations, and diplomatic missions who have been arbitrarily detained since June 2024. He also urged the release of those still being held from 2021 and 2023, stressing that their continued detention is unacceptable.
