Yemeni Ambassador Discusses Water Projects in Taiz with Head of Turkish Cooperation Agency
[20/08/2025 05:49]
Ankara – Saba
Yemen’s Ambassador to Turkey, Mohammed Tareq, met today with the President of the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA), Abdullah Eren, to discuss bilateral cooperation in development and humanitarian fields, with a focus on supporting the water sector in the city of Taiz.

Ambassador Tareq outlined the severe humanitarian situation in Taiz caused by the prolonged water crisis and the widespread destruction of water infrastructure as a result of the war initiated by the Houthi militia. He said the damage has deprived hundreds of thousands of residents of access to essential drinking water.

He informed the Turkish official about the efforts of the Yemeni government and local authorities in Taiz to carry out urgent interventions. These include rehabilitating and reactivating non-operational wells and gradually shifting to solar-powered pumping systems as a sustainable solution to fuel shortages and high operating costs.

The ambassador appreciated Turkey’s support through TIKA in various sectors, expressing Yemen's desire to expand cooperation in water, health, and development projects to ease the suffering of citizens in Taiz and other provinces.

TIKA President Abdullah Eren confirmed the agency’s support for Yemen and its willingness to consider possible interventions in Taiz’s water sector, such as drilling new wells, rehabilitating existing ones, and installing solar-powered water systems. He instructed TIKA’s office in Yemen to coordinate directly with local authorities in Taiz to ensure effective implementation of the projects and to meet urgent humanitarian needs while strengthening ties between the two countries.
