Vice Minister of Planning discusses strengthening food security efforts with UN officials

Vice Minister of Planning and International Corporation Dr. Nizar Basuhaib discussed Wednesday with Karen Bouven, the New Country Director for Humanitarian Affairs in Yemen (OCHA) coordination efforts in humanitarian and developmental fields.

The two parties addressed challenges arising from reduced funding, particularly in food security.

They discussed the humanitarian issues stemming from food insecurity expected in the coming months due to funding shortages.

They explored ways to mobilize support for food security programs, preparations for the upcoming humanitarian-development forum in September, participation in the international food security conference in Saudi Arabia, the impacts of the low-pressure system on Hadramout Governorate, and efforts to combat the risk of famine in the Abs district of Hajjah Governorate.

The Vice Minister emphasized that funding food security programs is a top priority for the government due to its direct impact on citizens' livelihoods. He highlighted the importance of effective partnerships with UN organizations and international partners to direct efforts toward priority sectors and ensure a responsive approach based on actual needs on the ground as presented by national sectors.

For her part, the UN official noted that the reality of reduced funding for humanitarian and relief projects, especially in food security, poses significant challenges for humanitarian work in Yemen.

She emphasized the UN's commitment to finding solutions for gaps related to this issue, particularly food security, and praised the efforts of the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation in facilitating the work of humanitarian partners in Yemen.

Additionally, Dr. Basuhaib discussed with Hani Mahdi, the regional director of CRS in the Middle East and Europe the organization's interventions and activities in the fields of education, environment, and water, as well as its plans for the coming year.

He stressed the importance of expanding and diversifying the organization's interventions to include the most impacted groups by the war, particularly people with disabilities, and the need to enhance coordination mechanisms with government entities to improve the efficiency of humanitarian and developmental interventions and strengthen the sustainability of their positive impact on targeted communities.

In another meeting, Dr. Nizar Bashihab discussed with Abdulmonem Mustafa, the director of the UN Development Program (UNDP) office in Aden, the progress of projects implemented by the program in the fisheries sector, particularly the fishing and landing projects in Aden Governorate, and the challenges facing their implementation.
