Yemen has affirmed that the Iran-backed Houthi militia poses a direct threat to regional peace and security and to international navigation, saying the group is a tool used to undermine Yemen’s sovereignty and stability, disrupt basic services, and obstruct the delivery of humanitarian assistance to those in need.

Minister of Water discusses cooperation with UNESCO

Minister of Water and Environment, Engineer Tawfiq al-Sharjabi discussed Wednesday with the Head of the Science Program at the UNESCO Office for the Gulf States and Yemen Mohammad Alawi areas of cooperation between the ministry and the organization.

They also discussed the needs of the water and environment sectors in accordance with the ministry's strategic priorities, particularly in the fields of water resource management, climate change adaptation, and capacity building.

The meeting included a presentation from UNESCO on its programs related to water, human and biosphere interactions, geoparks, disaster risk reduction, as well as several projects being prepared in partnership with the ministry.

The Minister emphasized the ministry's commitment to enhancing the partnership with UNESCO to benefit from international expertise in developing its technical and institutional capacities, and implementing quality programs that serve sustainable development goals in the fields of water and environment.

He stressed the need for cooperation to support the ministry's priorities, build its institutional capacities, and address the challenges of climate change and disaster risk reduction.

Al-Sharjabi praised UNESCO's interventions, highlighting the importance of expanding efforts in protecting natural resources, enhancing community awareness, and building national capacities, especially given the increasing challenges related to climate change and natural disaster risks.

For his part, the UNESCO representative affirmed the organization's commitment to supporting the ministry's efforts in achieving its national priorities in the fields of water and environment, and enhancing its capacities to tackle climate change challenges and disaster risk reduction, as well as early warning systems, which contribute to strengthening cooperation and partnership between the two parties.
