Deputy Minister of Human Rights discusses support for migrant, displaced persons protection efforts with Head of IOM

Deputy Minister of Legal Affairs and Human Rights, Dr. Mohammed Basarda discussed Monday with the Head of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) mission in Yemen Abdulsttar Asouf ways to enhance joint coordination in addressing migration challenges and supporting the rights of the most vulnerable groups, including migrants and displaced persons.

During the meeting, attended by the Director General of Organizations and Reports at the ministry Issam al-Shaeri, Dr. Basarda praised the humanitarian role of the organization in welcoming migrants and providing essential health and relief services.

He emphasized that Yemen's geographic location as a major transit country for migrants from the Horn of Africa presents increasing challenges and significant pressures, especially amid the current economic and humanitarian conditions.

Basarda pointed out that the rising number of migrants requires effective partnerships and international support to enable national institutions to fulfill their roles in this complex issue.

He reiterated the government's commitment to international agreements and conventions related to migrant rights.

He affirmed the ministry's eagerness to enhance cooperation with the IOM in areas of protection, healthcare, technical support, and capacity building, which would contribute to improving the efficiency of relevant authorities and enhancing their responsiveness to the needs of migrants.

For his part, the Head of the IOM mission in Yemen expressed the organization's appreciation for the significant challenges faced by the Yemeni government in managing the migration issue, affirming the organization's commitment to continue cooperation and partnership with government entities to provide necessary support and alleviate the burdens resulting from increasing migration flows.
