ADEN - SABA
Minister of Water and Environment Engineer Tawfiq al-Sharjabi held a meeting today via video conferencing with a team from the World Bank.
They discussed enhancing climate and water information systems in Yemen, funded by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) with a budget of $17 million.
Minister al-Sharjabi explained that the project, implemented by the World Bank and approved by the Green Climate Fund, is the first intervention within the national climate finance program.
It represents a pivotal step in supporting efforts to adapt to the impacts of climate change and mitigate the increasing climate risks threatening Yemen's vital resources and sectors.
During the meeting, attended by the Deputy Minister and representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Fisheries, the General Authority for Environmental Protection, the General Authority for Civil Aviation and Meteorology, and the General Authority for Water Resources, al-Sharjabi noted that the project consists of three main components: the development of a climate and water information management system, the design of an integrated national system supported by remote sensing technologies, and the expansion of climate-resilient decision-making systems and early warning systems.
It aims to enhance the enabling environment by establishing central data management units, improving inter-sectoral coordination, and building the capacities of institutions and communities to optimally benefit from climate services.
The Minister emphasized that the project is an urgent response to address climate challenges, including floods, droughts and declining water resources.
It aims to empower communities to adapt, improve water resource management, and provide accurate data to farmers to help increase production and achieve food security.
The World Bank team is expected to coordinate with the Ministry's Climate Change Unit to complete the project documentation over the next three months, to be officially submitted to the Green Climate Fund as part of national efforts to enhance the resilience of local communities against the adverse effects of climate change.
