Minister of Health Discusses with UNOPS, WHO interventions in Yemen

Minister of Public Health and Population Dr. Qasem Buhybeh discussed Sunday with Rehana Zawar, the Director of the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) in Yemen the nature of interventions implemented by the office in health sector.

The meeting also discussed areas of distribution for these interventions, and their quality for the fourth and fifth phases of projects supported by the German Development Bank, as well as future intervention plans for the sixth phase of joint projects.

During the meeting, Dr. Buhybeh praised the role of the office in supporting the health sector's infrastructure, especially amid the escalating challenges the country faces due to the ongoing conflict and the deterioration of economic and humanitarian conditions.

He emphasized the importance of coordination between both parties to ensure that these interventions align with national priorities and the ministry's plans.

The minister reiterated the ministry's readiness to provide all necessary facilities to ensure the success of UNOPS's missions and to enhance partnership with it in a way that serves the interests of the health sector in Yemen.

He stressed the need for a clear and updated intervention map that takes into account actual needs at the district and facility levels, based on accurate data and effective partnership with health authorities in the governorates.

For her part, the UNOPS director presented a range of ongoing and completed projects, noting that the office's interventions cover several governorates and focus on improving health infrastructure, providing solar energy for health facilities, and implementing water and sanitation projects linked to health service delivery centers.

In another meeting, the Minister of Health discussed with Dr. Noha Mahmoud, Deputy Representative of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Yemen and Director of the WHO Office in Aden, the aspects of joint cooperation and the level of coordination in implementing health programs, as well as ways to enhance the effectiveness of the organization's interventions to meet the growing health needs across various governorates of the republic.

The Minister emphasized the importance of strengthening the presence of the WHO office in the temporary capital, Aden, and empowering it with broader authorities to improve health response levels and adapt to field changes.

He pointed out to the necessity for ongoing and diligent work between both parties to cover gaps and expand interventions.

The minister stressed the importance of prioritizing scientific research as a tool for marketing new projects and achieving sustainable funding, calling for concerted efforts between the organization and the various sectors of the ministry to accurately identify gaps and present them to partners and donors in an organized and studied manner.

For her part, Dr. Noha Mahmoud reaffirmed the WHO's commitment to supporting the health sector in Yemen and enhancing its partnership with the ministry.
