Oil Minister discusses challenges over export suspension with US diplomat
[24/06/2025 06:04]

ADEN - SABA
Minister of Oil and Minerals Dr. Saeed al-Shamasi discussed during a video call with the Charge d'affaires of US Embassy in Yemen Jonathan Pecha latest developments related to the oil and gas sector in Yemen and the challenges the government faces due to the suspension of exports caused by Houthi militia attacks on oil export ports.

Minister al-Shamasi explained that the Houthi attacks in late 2022 led to the halt of export operations and a loss of about 70 percent of the government's revenues, which negatively affected the living conditions of citizens.

Al-Shamasi confirmed that the government is making diligent efforts, in coordination with allies in the support coalition and international partners, to secure strategic facilities and export ports and restore economic activity.

He praised the measures taken by the U.S. Treasury Department against companies and entities supporting the Houthi terrorist militia, especially those involved in illegal dealings in the oil products sector, affirming that these steps contribute to drying up the funding sources for hostile activities that threaten the security and stability of Yemen and the region.

For his part, the US confirmed his country’s support for the Yemeni government and its right to manage its natural resources, referring to the steps taken by the Trump administration to classify the Houthis as a terrorist organization and subsequent Treasury decisions targeting the funding sources of the Houthi terrorist militias.

The US emphasized that one of Washington's priorities is to ensure that no economic revenues flow to strengthen the military capabilities of the Houthi militias, reiterating his country’s commitment to cooperating with the Yemeni government in various vital areas.
