ADEN - SABA
Prime Minister Salem Bin Breik received Monday here the UNICEF Resident Representative in Yemen Peter Hawkins, who briefed him on the ongoing arrangements to launch the "Support" program for social assistance, aimed at providing unconditional cash transfers to the most vulnerable and needy groups throughout Yemen.
The UN official explained that the program is an enhanced version of the unconditional cash transfer project implemented by UNICEF, funded by the World Bank since 2017, which has served over 1.4 million families in Yemen, helping them meet their basic needs.
He noted that the improved design of the Support program targets 500,000 Yemeni families, with ongoing coordination with relevant government authorities to initiate implementation procedures.
He expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister and wished him success in his duties leading the government.
The meeting also addressed UNICEF's interventions in humanitarian fields, particularly in the health sector, supporting government efforts to address fevers and the spread of epidemics, in addition to the organization's plans to enhance its interventions in child protection, providing safe water, quality education, skill-building, and all forms of life-saving assistance.
The Prime Minister praised the existing partnership between the government and UNICEF and emphasized the importance of developing it and enhancing coordination to determine interventions proportionate to the needs, especially in areas experiencing significant displacement, while avoiding previous shortcomings.
He expressed hope for UNICEF's support for the government's efforts to contain fevers and epidemics, balancing humanitarian work with sustainable development efforts.
