Information Minister Muammer al-Eryani said the statements made by former British Ambassador to Yemen, Edmund Fitton-Brown, represent a shocking testimony that reveals a previously unspoken aspect of the causes of the ongoing crisis in Yemen and its complexities.
Al-Eryani added that these statements reflect a deep assessment of the systemic errors in the way the international community has handled the Yemeni issue.
He pointed out that the former British ambassador highlighted a serious structural flaw in handing over the reins of political influence to organizations that claim neutrality and humanitarianism.
Al-Eryani emphasized that the so-called "humanitarian lobby" has contributed to attempts to legitimize the existence of an armed, coupist, and terrorist [Houthi] militia through pushing for weak agreements.
He noted that the Yemeni people are now paying a heavy price for this intervention, with millions suffering from hunger, economic collapse, and lack of services.
Al-Eryani called for accountability from international organizations regarding their role and their exceeding of their mandates, which has hindered efforts to restore the state.
The former British ambassador had said, "Essentially the international community was swayed by a number of prejudices and misconceptions, including about the moral sanctity of humanitarian activity."
He said, "Pressure groups like Oxfam and Amnesty teamed up with the human rights community and reinforced the humanitarian lobby, which was led by the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA)."
