Yemen has affirmed that the Iran-backed Houthi militia poses a direct threat to regional peace and security and to international navigation, saying the group is a tool used to undermine Yemen’s sovereignty and stability, disrupt basic services, and obstruct the delivery of humanitarian assistance to those in need.

Prime Minister discusses improving work efficiency with leaders of water ministry

Prime Minister Dr. Ahmed Awadh bin Mubarak chaired Tuesday a meeting with the leadership of the Ministry of Water and Environment, dedicated to discussing the conditions of the water and environment sectors, efforts to improve performance and work efficiency and the ministry's current and future plans and projects.

The meeting addressed the challenges facing the water, environment and sanitation sectors due to a lack of external funding, the solutions and proposals to overcome them, the importance of working according to an integrated water resources management methodology, environmental protection, conservation of natural resources, and rationalizing their use, as well as implementing projects to adapt to climate change and avoid natural disasters.

The meeting discussed the ministry's efforts and the institutions and offices affiliated with it in securing water for citizens and providing sanitation services, the existing obstacles, proposals to overcome them, and the strategies developed and being developed to combat natural disasters, climate change, and preserve biodiversity, among other issues.

Bin Mubarak affirmed the government's support for the Ministry of Water and Environment across all its sectors and institutions, enabling it to perform its duties and make it a priority in government work.

Dr. Ahmed Awad bin Mubarak emphasized the government's commitment to the Ministry of Water and Environment, considering it a primary priority, and the importance of working to create centers of excellence and success stories in its projects to attract more external funding.

He stressed the need to define policies and develop ways of thinking to implement the tasks and responsibilities in the various sectors of the ministry.

The Prime Minister directed the unification and integration of efforts between the ministry and the related ministries to ensure they fulfill their responsibilities and develop mechanisms for dealing with grants and external support specific to the water and sanitation sector and utilizing them correctly.

He emphasized focusing on strategic projects to utilize unconventional water sources such as desalination of seawater and use of alternative energy as solutions to water and energy issues, and to implement qualitative interventions in climate change projects.

For his part, Minister of Water Tawfeeq al-Sharjabi welcomed the Prime Minister's visit to familiarize himself with the ministry's conditions and the challenges it faces and to continuously follow up on its work, considering it among the priorities in government action.

He highlighted the achievements of the ministry during the past period and its future plans to enhance the capacity of water institutions and facilities, institutional building, capacity building, and updating information systems.
