The Chairman of the Gulf of Aden Fisheries Authority Dr. Abdulsalam Ahmed briefed a World Bank's delegation, headed by the Regional Director for Agriculture, Water and Environment sectors Ms. Mekarim Berhani, along with a team from the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Yemen, on the progress of work at the Dockyard Center in the al-Mualla District here.

Dr. Ahmed reviewed the ministry's efforts to reactivate the center and identify its needs, discussing its capacity to meet the needs of fishermen and fishing boats, as well as the mechanisms for receiving, handling and preserving fish in preparation for distribution in Aden's districts and other governorates.

The delegation also inspected the progress of a project to supply, install, and operate an ice factory with a production capacity of 10 tons per day, along with an ice storage unit, as well as the installation of a solar power generation system for the Dockyard Fishing Center, which is being implemented by the UNDP through the Public Works Project.

This is part of a project aimed at developing fisheries in the Arabian and Red Seas and the Gulf of Aden, with funding of $424,000 from the World Bank, aimed at improving the preservation and handling of fish by providing the best available technology in ice production.

Dr. Ahmed expressed his appreciation for the World Bank's efforts to rehabilitate and develop the Dockyard Fishing Center through the UNDP, which is currently installing an ice factory.

He emphasized that the rehabilitation of the center will provide a qualitative leap for fishing sector projects in the temporary capital, Aden, and will give a vital impetus to the ongoing efforts of the ministry's leadership to implement many sustainable projects in the fishing sector.

The World Bank's delegation praised the efforts made by the ministry's leadership, the Fisheries Authority, and the management of the Dockyard Center in developing the center, affirming their readiness to provide the necessary technical support to enhance its capacity to receive fish loads from fishing boats.
