The Member of the Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) Maj. General Aidarous al-Zubaidi, along with the Governor of the Socotra Archipelago Eng. Raafat al-Theqali, the Ministers of Transport Dr. Abdel Salam Hamayd and Planning and International Cooperation Dr. Wa'ed Badhib laid down today, Thursday, the foundation stone for a strategic seaport in the "Qerma" area of the Socotra archipelago.

The project, funded by the Kuwaiti Fund for Development, includes the construction of breakwaters, a dock to serve ships with a load of 10,000 tons, a maneuvering yard with a diameter of 265 meters and a depth of 10 meters, a navigation channel with a depth of 14 meters, an administration building, a customs office, a maintenance workshop, roads, a ground water tank and all other construction works.

The Minister of Transport Dr. Abdel Salam Humayd highlighted the importance of the port in facilitating the process of transportation to and from the governorate and alleviating the suffering of citizens in transporting their stuffs.

"The seaport is very important for improving the governorate's economy by receiving large cargo ships", Humayd stressed.

The Ministers of Civil Service and Insurance Dr. Abdel Nasser al-Wali, Agriculture, Irrigation and Fisheries Salem al-Soqatri, Electricity and Energy Mane'a bin Yameen, Social Affairs and Labor Dr. Mohammad al-Zaouri, Public Works and Roads Eng. Salem al-Hreeyzi, a number of governorate's senior officials and security and military commanders in the governorate attended the ceremony of laying down the foundation stone.
