The Republic of Yemen participated Monday in the opening session of the 58th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council held at the Council's headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, with a delegation headed by Yemen's Permanent Representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva Ambassador Dr. Ali Mujawar.
The agenda for the 58th session of the Council includes discussions on important issues, including human rights in conflict areas, protection of minorities, promotion of social justice, follow-up on the implementation of recommendations issued by various United Nations mechanisms, presentation of reports by special rapporteurs, and review of the human rights situations in several countries.
The Council will also consider more than 80 reports submitted by the United Nations General Secretariat, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, human rights experts and other investigative bodies regarding a wide range of issues related to the human rights situation in about 40 countries, and will hold a total of twenty interactive discussion sessions with mandate holders under special procedures.
On March 3, the High Commissioner for Human Rights will present an update to his annual report on the state of human rights worldwide, including Yemen.
The Council will also review reports prepared by the Working Group on the Universal Periodic Review regarding 14 countries, including Qatar and Iraq.
The Human Rights Council is an international governmental body within the United Nations system, established in 2006 to promote and protect human rights worldwide. The Council currently consists of 47 member countries, including Sudan, Algeria, Morocco, Kuwait, and Qatar.
